Massachusetts Philanthropy: Structure and Distribution

By fields, Massachusetts has 287 environmental charities; 1,547 cultural charities (1,087 Education, 447 Arts); and 1,561 human-service charities. The percentages of each in relation to the total are: 8%, 45%, and 45% (plus 3% promoting philanthropy as a whole).

The geographic distribution of charities across the Commonwealth is: Boston/Cambridge: 1,588; Suburban Boston: 921; southeastern Mass, Cape and Islands: 422; Western Mass: 458 , and Central Mass: 288. Rural areas probably have more local charities, which will appear later in a Local Supplement to the MPD.

The age distribution is reasonably represented in the 990s by years of IRS authorization, supplemented by information on charities' websites. Only 425 of today's charities were active in the half-century from 1915-1965, and 3,051 were created since then, 824 (24%) in the last ten years.
